All Things Stripe-y: Side Zip Sweater

J Crew Side Zip Sweater, H&M Boots, Treasure and Bond Skinny Jeans, Rebecca Minkoff Quilted Affair

As many of you know if you read this little bloggity blog of mine often, my little family is going through a bit of a change. Mav's retiring from the Army and we have spent the last several months trying to wait as patiently as possible for our house to sell, job plans to fall in place and a myriad of other stresses. Its that time. Decision time. Moving time. Ugh. I've successfully avoided this issue for as long as I possibly can. Now its time to put my feet on the ground and get running.

With all this in mind, the waiting presented two dilemma's. First, we didn't know where Mav was going to get a job. Just because your a several times over, combat proven, former Army helicopter instructor pilot with several thousand flight hours under your belt, doesn't mean you just walk into a civi job. No matter the qualifications, ratings, flight hours or certifications you have. Second, where are me and the kids going to set up home while he's working. We had plan a, plan b and plan c worked. Plan c was he gets a job where he is gone most of the time. The point of retiring from military life was that he wasn't going to be gone anymore, right? God willing, something will open up for him in the next few months that doesn't require the long distance relationship. And, if not, this is nothing new to us. We are used to it. Heck, the first 9 months of our relationship were long distance.

So, with all that, please forgive me if my activity on here for the next several weeks is hit or miss. Now you know why. Drop me a comment on here or check me out on Instagram! During all the mêlée that will ensue in the next month, I will attempt to post pics on IG with my currently wearing outfits of the day or other crazy happenings @sunshinesequinsblog. I may even do a photo shoot in a fantastic new place that might have snow!!! I know you're excited. I'm excited, too!

Don't forget to go over to shopstyle.com to get shoppable emails of all the lovely outfits on here. But you have to sign up first and then like my Instagram photos with the shopstyle.it tag! It's super-fun and super-easy! I love it!

Anyway, back to fashion. Remember, my great distraction? I'm going to talk a little about my obsession with nautical stripes and why I love all things stripe-y. For the last few seasons, I've been slowly adding striped clothing to my closet. Stripes are chic, sophisticated and casual at the same time. These are my three rules all wrapped up in one pretty package. Since January, I've been on a red stripe buying frenzy!!! Well, not really. I only bought two things buuuut these two things are making my Spring transition so lovely I can't stand it!

I saw this J Crew sweater while perusing their website a few weeks back and I couldn't resist it!!! The red stripes, the side zip details.....say it ain't so!  I was sold. It was love at first sight. I had to have it. You know me, I don't like spending a whooole lot of money on any one piece of clothing unless I think it has staying power. This one definitely does. I will wear it well into Spring and then bring it out for a Fall pick me up on those dreary days! What really sold me on this sweater was two things: its a heavier, yet lightweight sweater and the zippers!! Oh, how I love the details. A little extra drama never hurts, especially when I'm talking about fashion!

Now I'm going to talk your ear off about my new favorite brand of skinny jeans: Treasure and Bond brand. I love this brand not only because the skinnies hug and lift this bootie-licious babe in all the right places but it's also a "gives back" brand. I love brands that give back and especially ones that give to organizations that help empower girls and women. And with saying all that, they are even under $60!

Obviously I was avoiding face shots for this post. I don't know why. Maybe its because I'd been crying because it was Valentines Day and my daughter ran all the way across the soccer field at the park to give me a flower she picked just for me. She gave me a hug and said in the sweetest voice you ever heard "I wuv you Mommy."

Sniff, sniff.

Happy Monday Ya'll!

I love this little munchkin.

Just so you know, this moment is so rare to ever get caught on camera because I'm usually the one with behind the camera! I have great shots of my husband and various other people with my children. Its a bit sad because I think that no one will ever replace a mother in a child's life.

As adults they will look at photos of themselves when they were a child and remember the feelings and the moments that created their life. All those lost moments in the psyche that make a person who they are. Those things you may not remember but are always on the surface of every decision and emotion you have. This is why photos are so important to me. I may not be an artsy craftsy mom who has a scrapbook with each moment detailed but if nothing else, my daughter will always have this picture to know, without a doubt, the love her mother has for her. I pray she never forgets.

Can I get an amen from all the moms who get this?

The Best Sunless Tanner

As the month of February is coming to an end that means Spring is just around the corner. That's right. It's almost time to start showing some skin again. What a perfect time to talk about how to get a sun-kissed glow just in time for Spring.

Around here, Spring comes sooner rather than later. By the end of March, showing some skin is par for the course and everybody is traveling to the beach. I've tried all different kinds of ways to get a sun-kissed look. From the tanning bed to the beach to lotions, creams and sprays. For the past few summers though, I've been on a sunless tanning kick. One summer I went with a spray tan package at a local tanning salon. Another summer I tried the drugstore variety of lotions. This year I decided to spend a little extra money and go for a mousse from the brand St. Tropez which is available at Nordstrom's and Sephora. While this is a little on the expensive side, I love the brown color it gives my skin, perfect for those skirts and dresses.

Here is a great starter kit:

The first time I purchased this mousse was in a travel size. I wanted to make sure I liked it before I committed to $40. I highly recommend buying the tanning mitt to insure even coverage, too. I've messed up sunless tanner in the past and was exclusively using a spray tan until I found the mitt. Also, if you don't like the thought of a mousse, I included a link for the spray version.

I've used this product several times over the last few weeks and couldn't be more happy. I love that it provides even color and the color slowly fades over time instead of leaving my skin splotchy. Ick! I can't stand that. I'm also still using my travel size bottle! I haven't gotten to my full size yet! I bet the full size bottle will last me all summer long. You know how most sunless tanners leave that smell? I didn't notice ANY smell after I used this. It takes a few hours for the color to completely develop. But, wow, was I surprised at the difference!

When I want more color, I just exfoliate in shower and use the mitt to apply the mousse. Easy, peasy!

St. Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Spray 6.7oz • St. Tropez • $35.00
St. Tropez Tanning Essentials Self Tan Starter Kit • St. Tropez Tanning Essentials • $25.00
St. Tropez Prep & Maintain Tan Applicator Mitt for Face (Set of 3) • St. Tropez • $10.00
St. Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Mousse • St. Tropez • $18.00–42.00
St. Tropez Self Tan Dark Bronzing Spray • St. Tropez • $40.00

St Tropez is also Allure magazines winner for best self tanner!!

Here is a picture of before and after of my legs! Gorgeous brown color!

As you can tell it makes a huge difference and I used the medium color. It was so easy to do I just can't believe it!

Go ahead. You know you want gorgeous glowing skin!

Feeling Nauti-cal

Well, you know. I had to go with this title, especially considering that movie premiered this last weekend. That one with all those shades of grey. Yep, that's about all I'm going to say on that topic. And, no, Mav and I did not spend Valentines night at the movies watching some ridiculously trendy movie. We actually spent it waiting. Yes, waiting for over an hour and a half to eat. TO EAT! I know, I told you we usually spend it at home for this precise reason, but this year we decided to venture out. Big mistake.

My biggest pet peeve is waiting and to eat no less. It's such a waist of time. I won't even wait in line at Starbucks and I love Starbucks. But I digress. Back to the issue at hand, nautical stripes. I do have a love affair with stripes, especially for Spring and Summer. Spring, for my area of the world, is about a month away with Spring Break coming and I'll be wearing short sleeves. With that in mind, I've been looking for some cute, inexpensive dresses. I tend to buy dresses that are versatile, comfortable and chic. Dressy enough to wear to work or casual enough to wear with a cool pair of sneakers. I love that this dress is red and short sleeve. Perfect for Spring and Summer transition. I can wear it far into Summer and even for July 4th.

How To Wear Camo Print Pants for Spring

What I'm Wearing:

Crème Faux Leather Jacket: Jessica Simpson (similar here in white or add a white blazer)

Basic White Tee: Target

Heels: Old Navy (sold out but similar here)

Handbag: Kate Spade (similar here)

Belt: Target

Nails: Insta-Dry by Sally Hansen in Slick Slate

Ahh, is it really Monday, again? I don't know about you but this weekend went by too fast!

Speaking of this weekend, I've had Spring neutrals on my mind. What can I say. I think all the red and pink from this last week made me long for a (color) palette cleansing. Since these colors are having a moment in fashion, I thought I'd come up with my own version of neutrals with a pair of monochromatic camo pants.

I love these pants because they offer a little stretch and have loads of subtle details with the utility styling. I added a basic white tee, a crème leather jacket and neutral accessories. I put a punch of interest by layering feminine necklaces and a sequin belt.

Since these pants are a subtle greige, (ugh, spell-check is going to give me grief for this post) it provides the perfect amount of femininity. And they're super comfy!

Two Oh-So-Spring Ways To Wear a Pink Pleated Midi Skirt

Alright, we need to talk. Girl to girl. I'm going to be honest, I'm not a girly, girl. I'm a soccer playing, weight lifting, try any new workout, girl. My mom tried to make me a girly girl. But I just wanted to be comfy and hang out with my brothers climbing fences and riding skateboards. In other words, all the fun stuff.

I've since realized that femininity is one of the best parts of being a woman (besides being able to make tiny humans, that is). Today, I have a daughter of my own and struggle to find the fine line to walk of when to dress her, when to allow her to dress herself and when to just let it go, as Elsa says.

Since I am trying to branch out a bit, I've made it my mission to add pink to my closet. When I saw this pink midi skirt on the Windsor site, I thought this would be the perfect pink addition to my closet. I could've easily gone with black or red or floral and maybe I will in a later post for more modern flare. But for now, this is what I call retro glam!

J Crew Sweater, Windsor Pink Midi Skirt, Rebecca Minkoff Black Mini Mac Sunshine and Sequins Fashion Blog

I chose a classic black turtleneck and statement necklace for the first look for a Winter date vibe. The second look, I chose a crisp, white, button up shirt, added pearls and neutral accessories for a cool, Spring work look. Both of these looks are classic and feminine.

Here are few more pics from the photo shoot.

Black and White Colorblock Sweater and Boyfriend Jeans

I've said it before on here that I love Gwen Stefani's style. Not only do I like her music but I love her rocker chic style. Most outfits I see her in, when she's in a casual outfit, revolves around the two B's: black and boyfriend jeans. When I was obsessing over the new issue of People StyleWatch, I came across a picture of Ms. Stefani rocking this look. Black and boyfriend jeans with killer heels.

So, off to my closet I went.

Black and white sweater: check.
Super slouchy, i.e. super comfortable boyfriend jeans: check.
Rocker cage heels, cool shades, red lipstick: check, check and check.

My supermodel pose because it's the only way I stayed upright on those railroad ties. Some may say cage heels aren't practical. But I say, live out loud! I've had mine for over 6 years. I've worn them on several occasions when I want to add a little edge to an outfit and they are still in style. #streetchic

This is a really easy outfit to put together!!

Casual Valentine's Date: Guava Sweater and White Jeans

Guava Sweater, Madewell White Skinny Jeans, ASOS clutch, Block Heel Sandals Sunshine and Sequins Blog

Spring has sprung and so have the colors for Spring 2015. I had Radiant Orchid in the Fall and now Guava is my new favorite for Spring. This guava colored subtly striped sweater from Old Navy is the perfect way to add a little fruit to your style diet. :)

What I'm Wearing

Block-Heel Sandals: Old Navy

Clutch: ASOS (sold out) similar here and here and here

My absolute new favorite lipstick: Urban Decay Sheer Revolution in Sheer Rapture. The perfect dusty rose color and my new best friend. This is the best lip-gloss/lipstick I've found in years. It goes on smooth, with nourishing oils, antioxidants and it has Maxi-Lip which defines and hydrates for softer, fuller lips. And it never dries out my lips. This is the perfect subtle shade for those sun-kissed days of Summer. Try it. I promise you will fall in love. The nail polish is Essie: Hi Maintenance. This is a very nude, glossy polish for a natural look.

I love that this sweater is not the typical pink. I'll be honest. Its one of the only pink pieces of clothing I have in my closet.

Guava Sweater, Madewell Jeans, ASOS clutch, Block Heel Sandals Sunshine and Sequins Blog

Not sure about the whole editing photos thing as in this above photo. One thing I am sure of is the color for this sweater. It comes in blue and this muted pink guava. I'm not a fan of pinks or corals so I almost bought the blue. Corals and pinks generally wash out my skin color. But imagine my surprise when I got this in the mail and tried it on. I love, love, love this color. AND it goes very nicely with my skin tone. Such a win, win for me in Spring when all the colors move toward the pastel side. The side of color I don't go for. Now I use these colors in accents such as a camisole under a jacket or a dress under a cardigan or a skirt.

For the colors that compliment my skin tone; think Summer/Winter. Lots of teal, aqua, fuchsia, cobalt, bright white and purple. In fact, aqua is my signature color. Its the color I get the most compliments when I wear. The color of the sea. Go figure. It's also my favorite color and graces the walls of a few rooms in my home.

Colors are unique to the individual and that's why I think style is very personal. It's important for every women to understand how her hair, skin and eye color impacts what colors will compliment her overall look.

When I was a little girl, my mom had a book called Color Me Beautiful. (If you are interested in learning more about your personal color, they now have a whole website where you can have a color consultation (if you subscribe) and you can order your own swatches to carry with you.) I remember obsessing over that book and all the color swatches contained inside when I was younger (I've always loved color). I also remember later in my 20's cutting out the swatches that were Summer/Winter and using those when I went shopping. Its funny the things you remember from childhood and how you carry those into adulthood.

Yours Truly,
